S-Africa contemplates closing Israeli embassy
In response to a question about implementing the November 2023 National Assembly resolution to shut down the Israeli embassy, Lamola said consultations have taken place within government bodies to prepare a memorandum for Cabinet consideration. He emphasized that the power to decide on the embassy’s closure lies solely with the Cabinet, in line with the constitutional separation of powers.
Lamola noted that the Israeli embassy has been downgraded and currently only handles routine consular services such as visas and travel arrangements. It no longer engages in full political, diplomatic, or economic relations between the two countries.
While unable to specify an exact timeline, Lamola assured that the matter will be addressed by the Cabinet before the year’s end. He dismissed claims of external pressure influencing the decision, reaffirming that South Africa will act independently and in accordance with its constitution, policies, and national interests.
When asked about possible economic sanctions against Israel, Lamola explained that such measures would also require Cabinet approval. He acknowledged that South Africa supports similar sanctions enacted by other countries, including the European Union and G7 nations, aimed at Israeli officials linked to aggression against Palestine.
