Russian Authorities Warn of Spy Operation
(MENAFN) Russian officials have raised serious concerns about what they allege is an intelligence-collecting operation concealed behind a patriotic photography competition, reportedly orchestrated by foreign espionage agencies.
A counter-disinformation organization has pointed fingers at Ukraine as the force behind this covert scheme.
On Monday, a regional division of the Federal Security Service (FSB) issued a public warning that online advertisements promoting such contests could be traps designed to lure participants into unlawful activities.
The FSB highlighted a specific contest where organizers asked for high-resolution images of bridges, railway hubs, and industrial sites.
Authorities claimed the real purpose of this initiative was “the collection of intelligence on infrastructure and its transfer to a foreign intelligence service at the expense of Russian security.”
Russian news outlets pinpointed an online advertisement believed to have triggered the alert.
They observed multiple red flags suggesting the contest was dubious, starting with a misspelling of the word “contest,” which could imply the involvement of AI in crafting the post.
Additionally, the organizers did not publish comprehensive rules or obtain official permission to process personal data, both mandatory requirements under Russian legislation.
