London demonstration takes place in support of Palestine
The gathering occurred outside Westminster Magistrates’ Court, where Ben Jamal, director of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC), and Chris Nineham, vice-chair of the Stop the War Coalition, appeared to face public order charges linked to a January 18 march in central London that resulted in 77 arrests.
Protesters at the courthouse voiced criticism of government policies and the policing of pro-Palestinian demonstrations. Jamal, 61, and Nineham, 63, were formally charged but granted unconditional bail by the judge. Their trial is scheduled to begin on February 23 next year at the same court.
Outside, demonstrators displayed Palestinian flags and chanted in support of the accused. Signs held at the rally included slogans such as "Stop political policing," "Just who wants to silence us?" and "Proscribe the UK gov't."
The demonstration was briefly met with opposition from a small group of pro-Israeli protesters, but police intervened to prevent any clashes.
