Armenian Premier Pledges to ‘Liberate’ Armenian Apostolic Church
(MENAFN) Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan declared on Tuesday that he will take personal charge in “liberating” the Armenian Apostolic Church (AAC) as conflicts between the government and church leaders intensify.
In a Facebook post, Pashinyan claimed that the AAC’s governing council has fallen under the influence of an “anti-Christ, anti-state” faction and emphasized that this control “must be liberated.”
“I will lead that liberation,” Pashinyan asserted, singling out several key figures, including Garegin II, the AAC’s head, and Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, who spearheaded protests in 2024 demanding Pashinyan’s resignation, accusing them of a “complete lack of connection and relationship … with Jesus Christ and His teachings.”
On June 25, the Armenian Investigative Committee announced it had thwarted an alleged coup attempt led by Galstanyan aimed at toppling the government, charging him and accomplices with attempting to instigate a regime change.
Galstanyan and 14 others were detained that same day, with Archbishop Mikael Ajapakhyan, leader of the AAC’s Shirak Diocese, arrested two days later.
The church condemned Ajapakhyan’s detention, urging the judicial system and authorities to secure his release.
