Germany Accuses China of Targeting German Aircraft
(MENAFN) Germany has accused China of directing a laser at one of its military aircraft during a European Union-led naval operation in the Red Sea.
The German Foreign Ministry released a statement on X, claiming, “The Chinese military used a laser to target a German aircraft participating in the EU operation ASPIDES.”
The ministry strongly condemned the act, stating that such actions endangered German personnel and interfered with the mission.
“Putting German personnel at risk and disrupting the operation is completely unacceptable,” the ministry emphasized.
In response, Germany summoned China's ambassador in Berlin to formally express its objection over the matter.
According to a news outlet, the aircraft targeted was a German surveillance plane assigned to the operation.
The alleged incident took place near the Yemeni coastline when the German aircraft approached a Chinese warship.
German officials told the publication that the Chinese vessel failed to follow proper emergency communication procedures and instead used a laser against the plane. This breach of protocol has raised serious safety and diplomatic concerns.
China has not yet issued any public response to the accusations.
The EU’s ASPIDES mission is designed to safeguard a critical maritime trade corridor from Houthi attacks.
The Houthis have been striking commercial ships to pressure Western nations to cease support for Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.
Roughly 700 German service members are currently involved in the operation.
In January, the German parliament approved an extension of the country’s participation in the mission through the end of October 2025.
