Beirut Hosts Syrian, Lebanese Dialogue

(MENAFN) The city of Beirut served as the venue on Monday for a high-level dialogue between Lebanese and Syrian authorities to tackle mutual concerns, with particular focus on the matter of Syrians held in Lebanese custody and individuals unaccounted for.

This engagement signals ongoing attempts by both nations to address long-standing, sensitive issues affecting their relationship.

As reported by a news agency, the discussions brought together Mohammad Yaqoub Al-Omar, who leads the consular affairs division at Syria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Lebanon’s Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri. Al-Omar was joined by a team representing the Syrian ministry during the talks.

Al-Omar highlighted that the primary agenda included deliberations on Syrian detainees and those missing within Lebanese territory, along with various other shared matters.

However, he did not disclose additional specifics regarding the content or outcomes of the meeting.

He went on to note that “both sides reaffirmed the importance of enhancing brotherly relations between Syria and Lebanon, based on mutual coordination and cooperation.”

This suggests a mutual interest in strengthening diplomatic and institutional ties through continued dialogue.

Earlier this year in April, Lebanese Premier Nawaf Salam held a meeting in Damascus with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa.

That encounter marked the first visit by a Lebanese official since al-Sharaa assumed leadership, and similarly addressed the pressing issue of Syrian nationals detained in Lebanon.

Persistent concerns remain regarding the Lebanese-Syrian border, which has historically been a flashpoint due to illegal movement of people and contraband.

Yet, the unresolved situation involving Syrian prisoners in Lebanese jails continues to be among the most divisive matters impacting relations between the two neighboring countries.
