Canadian PM Reveals U.S. Talks Could Pave Way for Tariff Relief
(MENAFN) Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has expressed optimism that “small agreements” on tariff relief could emerge following his recent discussions with US President Donald Trump.
The two leaders held a conversation on Monday, but Carney only made the details public on Wednesday, noting that while the meeting had some positive outcomes, further work remains. Speaking to reporters before entering a Cabinet meeting, Carney described the dialogue as productive but cautioned against expecting immediate results.
“We are expecting agreements, small agreements, in some of the strategic sectors,” Carney said in a video aired by a news outlet. “We will see. It’s not a guarantee.”
He specifically referenced industries such as vehicle manufacturing, steel, and aluminum, all of which have been heavily impacted by US-imposed tariffs.
Carney characterized the conversation with Trump as “good,” though he emphasized that tariffs were just one of many topics discussed. In addition to trade, the two leaders also covered a broad range of subjects, including geopolitical matters and labor issues.
“We spoke at length on a wide range of issues, including on trade, but (also) geopolitical, other issues, labor issues, et cetera,” Carney stated.
Carney and his Cabinet were meeting in the Greater Toronto Area, while senior Canadian officials have traveled back and forth between the two countries to engage with US lawmakers on the tariffs.
Michael Sabia, Clerk of the Privy Council and Secretary to the Cabinet, is the latest senior official to visit Washington, where he is set to meet with top US officials, including members of the Trump administration.
Carney emphasized that the discussions will continue and urged patience for any immediate breakthroughs.
“Don’t expect immediate white smoke on one of these strategic sectors. But that’s the type of conversation that we’re having and will continue to have,” he concluded.
