Toyota Reveals Plans to Launch Electric Vehicle in Europe
(MENAFN) Toyota, the Japanese automotive leader, revealed on Wednesday that it will begin production of its new battery electric vehicle (BEV) at its plant in Kolin, Czechia. This marks a significant milestone, as the company’s latest electric model will be the first of its kind to roll off the production lines in Europe.
As part of this expansion, Toyota will invest around €680 million ($783.9 million) into the Kolin facility. The investment will support the construction of new infrastructure necessary for the production of the upcoming BEV, including an expanded space for vehicle and battery manufacturing, as well as additional paint and welding workshops.
The factory, which currently produces about 220,000 Aygo X and Yaris Hybrid models annually, will now enhance its diverse production capabilities. The plant’s total size will grow from 152,000 square meters to 173,000 square meters to accommodate the electric vehicle production.
This strategic investment is also expected to boost local employment as the factory increases its operational scale.
Since its establishment in 2002 with the production of the Aygo, Toyota’s Kolin facility has manufactured over 4.5 million vehicles. The plant became fully owned by the company in 2021 and now employs roughly 3,200 workers.
"This decision signals a further roll-out of its multi-pathway strategy designed to achieve its objective of carbon neutral operations in Europe by 2040," a statement from Toyota noted.
