UK Blocks Israeli Officers from Defense Academy

(MENAFN) The United Kingdom has chosen to stop accepting Israelis into one of its most renowned military academies, the Royal College of Defence Studies, pointing to Israel's operations in Gaza, a news outlet reported on Sunday.

The British Ministry of Defense confirmed that beginning next year, Israel will be excluded from the institution, which has educated top-ranking officers and officials from across the globe since 1927.

This step represents the first instance in which Israelis have been prohibited from joining the academy, originally established under Winston Churchill’s vision of encouraging international cooperation among both military and civilian leaders, according to the report.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense stated that Israel’s behavior in Gaza was "wrong," adding that the government resolved to deny access to the college as a consequence.

The measure has provoked strong objections in Israel. Amir Baram, the director general of Israel’s Defense Ministry and also a former graduate of the academy, condemned the decision as "a profoundly dishonorable act of disloyalty to an ally at war."

In a formal letter to the Ministry of Defense, Baram further described the ruling as "a discriminatory act" and "a disgraceful break with Britain's proud tradition of tolerance and plain decency."
