Philippine Earthquake Claims Over Seventy Lives

(MENAFN) A powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck Cebu province in the central Philippines on September 30, leaving 72 dead and affecting 547,394 people, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported Monday.

The offshore quake, occurring at a depth of 5 kilometers, jolted the region at 9:59 p.m. local time—when many residents were either asleep or getting ready for bed. According to the NDRRMC, 559 individuals sustained injuries from the sudden seismic event.

The tremor inflicted extensive damage across the province, destroying homes, infrastructure, and businesses alike.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has logged over 7,000 aftershocks by 2 p.m. Monday local time. These ongoing tremors have forced many to seek refuge outdoors, residing in makeshift tents amid safety concerns.
