Floods in Mexico result in around forty-one deaths
Mexico’s civil defense authorities said intense rainfall has been recorded in 31 of the country’s 32 states, leading to overflowing rivers, inundated villages, landslides, and the collapse of roads and bridges.
The central state of Hidalgo has been among the hardest hit, with at least 22 fatalities reported, around 1,000 homes damaged, and 90 communities cut off from rescue teams, according to federal security authorities. Neighboring Puebla recorded at least nine deaths, affecting roughly 80,000 residents, the state government said. Flooding also claimed five lives in Veracruz and one in Queretaro.
President Claudia Sheinbaum stated on X that government teams are being deployed to clear roads and provide assistance to affected communities. More than 10,000 troops, along with boats, planes, helicopters, and rescue vehicles, are engaged in relief operations, including the distribution of aid and the operation of emergency shelters for displaced residents.
The worst-affected region has been the Sierra Madre Oriental, a mountain range along the Gulf of Mexico, where landslides and collapsed roads have isolated small communities. A reporting team in Tulancingo, Hidalgo, observed blocked mountain roads due to landslides.
Meteorologists explained that the heavy rainfall, particularly intense since Thursday, resulted from seasonal shifts and warm, humid air from the Gulf of Mexico rising over the mountains. A cold front moving from the north has further amplified precipitation across much of the country.
Officials on the Pacific coast are monitoring Tropical Depression Raymond and the remnants of former Hurricane Priscilla, both of which have brought heavy rains to states including Chiapas, Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Michoacan. Raymond is projected to reach southern Baja California over the weekend, according to the US National Hurricane Center.
