Trump files lawsuit against BBC over Jan. 6 speech edit
Trump’s legal team claims that the British broadcaster portrayed him in a “false, defamatory, malicious, disparaging, and inflammatory” manner in a documentary aired in the UK a week before the 2024 election. The lawsuit centers on an edited version of his Jan. 6, 2021, speech that emphasized his calls to march on the Capitol and “fight like hell” while omitting portions where he encouraged supporters to protest peacefully.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Trump said he was suing the BBC “for putting words in my mouth” and accused the network of presenting statements he “never said.”
The BBC previously apologized for the edits aired on its Panorama program in November but declined to pay compensation or formally acknowledge defamation. Following the controversy, BBC Director General Tim Davie and the head of news, Deborah Turness, resigned.
This action adds to Trump’s history of defamation litigation, as he has previously filed suits against US networks CBS and ABC, both of which resulted in multimillion-dollar settlements.
