Norway, Germany Ink Defense Pact to Boost NATO Cooperation
"Strong European cooperation is essential to fulfilling NATO’s burden-sharing commitments, where Europe must assume a greater share of responsibility for its own security," Sandvik said.
He added that Germany "is one of Norway’s most important allies in Europe and our key partner in the EU. Now, we are taking our close and robust cooperation a step further."
The agreement covers five areas of focus: space-based surveillance, maritime security, land warfare, rapid reinforcement capabilities, and defense industry collaboration.
European leaders have increasingly highlighted the need for regional defense autonomy, responding in part to signals from Washington urging allies to take on more security responsibilities. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said at the conference that Washington seeks “to revive old friendships,” while European officials emphasize strengthening their own capabilities.
Norway’s parliament, Stortinget, recently approved the purchase of two additional submarines, bringing its total to six. Once operational, both Norway and Germany will each operate six identical 212CD-class submarines. The two countries are also cooperating on the development of next-generation long-range maritime missiles (3SM).
German forces regularly train and conduct exercises in Norway, including during the upcoming winter exercise Cold Response 26.
