Germany Sees Slight Decline in Economic Sentiment

(MENAFN) Germany's economic outlook dimmed slightly in February, with a closely watched confidence indicator falling short of market expectations and the country's leading economic research body warning that the nascent recovery remains precarious.

The ZEW Institute in Mannheim reported Tuesday that its ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment slipped 1.3 points to 58.3 in February, a notable miss against analyst forecasts of 65.8 — a gap that signals lingering unease among financial market experts despite broader signs of stabilization.

In a modest counterpoint, the institute's gauge of current economic conditions edged upward, climbing 6.8 points to minus 65.9 — suggesting that while the present state of the economy remains deeply negative in absolute terms, perceptions on the ground are gradually improving.

ZEW President Achim Wambach offered a cautiously framed assessment of Germany's economic trajectory, acknowledging forward momentum while flagging significant headwinds. "There are still considerable structural challenges, especially for industry and private investment," Wambach said.

He urged policymakers to seize the moment, arguing that forthcoming reforms to Germany's social insurance framework should be leveraged decisively to bolster the country's competitiveness and appeal as a business destination.

The softness in sentiment was not confined to Germany alone. Across the broader eurozone, the ZEW Institute recorded a parallel dip in economic expectations, which fell 1.4 points to 39.4 in February — a signal that uncertainty is weighing on the wider European economic outlook as well.
