Germany's Left Accuses Merz's Government of Fueling War in Iran

(MENAFN) Germany's opposition party The Left launched a sharp attack Thursday against Chancellor Friedrich Merz's government, accusing Berlin of stoking the flames of the Iran war by continuing to authorize weapons shipments to Israel.

The Left lawmaker Ulrich Thoden pulled no punches, demanding an immediate and unconditional halt to all arms exports to Israel and condemning the broader military-industrial calculus driving such decisions.

"The profit interests of the military-industrial complex never serve the cause of peace, neither in the Middle East nor elsewhere; rather, they fuel wars that claim countless lives and can cost entire nations their economic prosperity," said Thoden.

The accusation carries legal weight. While Germany's constitution explicitly prohibits weapons exports to active war zones, the government greenlit arms deliveries to Israel during the opening weeks of the Iran war, the German Press Agency (dpa) cited the Economic Ministry as saying, following a parliamentary inquiry filed by Thoden.

The figures are stark: between February 28 and March 27, Berlin approved arms exports to Israel valued at €6.6 million — approximately $7.78 million.

Germany has long positioned itself as one of Israel's most steadfast allies, with successive governments arguing that the country bears a unique and enduring responsibility for Israel's security — a moral obligation rooted in its Nazi-era history.
