Italy Probes Cyberattacks Disrupting Supermarket Refrigeration Systems

(MENAFN) Italian authorities have opened an investigation into cyberattacks that disrupted refrigeration equipment at several supermarkets, resulting in spoiled food products, according to reports released Tuesday.

The incidents involved digital systems responsible for regulating temperatures inside refrigerated storage units. The intrusions caused temperatures to increase, putting frozen goods at risk.

Supermarket operator Conad confirmed that five of its locations had experienced disruptions, with two stores in the Veneto region and three others in Sicily among those affected.

The company said it had notified law enforcement and dispatched technical specialists to address the problems and limit potential damage.

After consulting intelligence officials and the National Cybersecurity Agency, the Italian government said preliminary findings suggested that the attacks had affected a limited number of businesses.

Authorities noted that only a small proportion of the country's thousands of supermarkets had reported problems.

The government also indicated that although most companies involved in food distribution had strengthened their cybersecurity defenses, some outlets still relied on outdated systems. These older technologies may contain security weaknesses that leave businesses exposed to similar attacks.
