Democrats Take Control of Congress, Flip Key Governorships in Midterm Elections

(MENAFN) Democrats secured control of both chambers of the US Congress and won several key governorships in Tuesday’s midterm elections, delivering a significant political setback to President Donald Trump.

The results reversed Republican control of Congress, where the party had previously held a 53-47 advantage in the Senate and a 219-215 majority in the House of Representatives.

US media projected that Democrats would hold a 54-44 Senate majority as of 0945 GMT Wednesday, after flipping at least seven seats previously held by Republicans.

Several victories marked significant political shifts in states that had long favored Republican candidates.

In Kansas, Democrat Adam Hamilton won a Senate seat that had remained under Republican control since 1932.

Texas also saw a major political change as James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton, becoming the state's first Democratic senator since 1988.

In Maine, Democrat Troy Jackson defeated longtime Republican Sen. Susan Collins, delivering the party its first Senate victory in the state since 1988.

Democrats also secured a breakthrough in South Carolina, where Annie Andrews defeated Darline Graham to take a Republican-held seat. The victory marked the first time Democrats had flipped a Senate seat in the state since 1998 and made Andrews the first woman elected to represent South Carolina in the Senate.

In North Carolina, Democrat Roy Cooper defeated Republican Michael Whatley, while Josh Turek secured victory in Iowa, becoming the first former Paralympian elected to the US Senate.

The results in both states represented the first Democratic Senate victories there since 2008.

Another major Democratic gain came in Ohio, where Sherrod Brown defeated Republican Jon Husted, capturing the seat previously held by Vice President JD Vance.

The string of victories reshaped the balance of power in Congress, ending Republican control of both chambers while delivering Democrats gains across several traditionally Republican-held Senate seats.
