Germany Records Sharp Drop in New Asylum Applications to Lowest October Level Since 2011
The number was considerably lower than the 8,823 applications recorded in October 2025 and the 19,785 registered in October 2024. The figures were obtained from Germany’s Federal Interior Ministry.
The last time the country recorded fewer new asylum seekers during October was in 2011, when the total stood at 4,106.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt welcomed the latest figures, describing the decline as a sign of progress in the government's efforts to restrict irregular migration. He also stressed that authorities intended to maintain the downward trend.
"We are successfully pushing back illegal migration. Now it is a matter of securing this development permanently: We are regulating, managing and controlling illegal migration consistently and with a clear course – in Germany and together with our partners at the European level," Dobrindt said.
Germany has maintained border controls with all nine of its neighboring countries since September 2024. The measures were introduced under Dobrindt's predecessor, Nancy Faeser, as part of efforts to strengthen checks on cross-border movement.
The government has also pursued the practice of turning back some asylum seekers at the country's borders, a policy that has attracted widespread criticism, according to reports.
The latest figures come amid continued debate over Germany's migration policies, including border enforcement and the handling of asylum applications.
